At one of the sessions of the International Sustainable Infrastructure Conference held in Istanbul, our TÜMAŞ team presented life-cycle cost data drawn from the water and environmental projects we have run over the past decade.
The core message of the talk was this: the construction cost of an infrastructure project accounts for only twenty percent of its total life-cycle cost; the rest comes from operation, maintenance and renewal. Low-carbon materials, sound hydraulic design and energy recovery raise the initial outlay slightly but produce far greater savings during operation.
A round-table session held after the panel with representatives of international financing institutions addressed the integration of sustainability criteria into procurement documents. We will share our methodology proposal in the post-conference report.
